About this role:

The Front-End Designer is a talented designer and front-end developer who loves helping social sector organizations — nonprofits, foundations, museums, universities, social ventures — develop technologies that strengthen their relationships with constituents, increase their own digital literacy and sophistication, and attract new activists, donors, and supporters.

This position is responsible for extending and translating static designs into production-ready HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. In close collaboration with the client services, UX, and development teams, the Front-End Designer will build holistic design systems in the form of an in-browser style guide or pattern library. The Front-End Designer needs a strong eye for design, expert knowledge in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and a passion for continually improving the design and code processes at Echo&Co. This position reports to the Senior Director, Experience Strategy, Architecture, & Design.

Requires:

  • Coding modular, scalable front-end component libraries for large-scale website redesigns.
  • Accurately translating static design mockups to the browser and extending those designs to additional components, interactive states, and all screen sizes.
  • Providing deep expertise in digital accessibility to our team and clients, including knowledge of WCAG.
  • Accurately estimating the time required to complete work, and completing the work in close to the estimated time.

What you’ll need in this role:

  • A desire to be a part of a team and culture centered on inclusion, collaboration, shared values, continuous learning, compassion, candor, and humor.
  • A desire to build a design career at Echo&Co and be part of shaping the direction, deliverables and creative processes alongside your peers.
  • Enthusiasm for small business life and teamwork, with a desire to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • A desire to apply best practices from the design and front-end fields to the context of social, cultural, and environmental good.
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally, most commonly to Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C.

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Design and code in-browser design systems in the form of a pattern library.
  • Design and code responsive, accessible and maintainable HTML/CSS/JS prototypes.
  • Create design deliverables that align with client needs, are delivered on-time, and are of the highest quality.
  • Collaborate with client services, design, user experience, and technology leads to define and manage project scope, ensuring successful execution of design and front-end work.
  • Be a thought leader in the field of design systems and pattern libraries, especially as it applies to nonprofit, philanthropy, government, and social ventures.

Technical knowledge and professional experience you’ll need:

  • Degree and/or certification (or equivalent) in graphic design, web design, computer science, or a related field.
  • 2+ years experience creating digital brand experiences and web design products.
  • 2+ years experience with HTML, CSS/SCSS, and JavaScript.
  • A strong portfolio of creative work for digital channels: desktop and mobile web, applications, email, and social media.
  • Experience producing clean, reusable, semantic, accessible, performant, and mobile-optimized front-end code.
  • Experience making in-browser style guides and pattern libraries with tools like Storybook.
  • Experience using HTML templating languages like Twig.
  • Experience with varying CSS methodologies and front-end frameworks such as OOCSS, SMACSS, Atomic CSS, Twitter Bootstrap, Zurb Foundation, etc.
  • Experience using build tools such as Webpack and Node/NPM.
  • The ability to produce front-end design and code that holds up under various design constraints: different browsers, different dimensions, different resolutions, different internet connection speeds, and different interaction methods (mouse, keyboard, gestures, screen readers, and other assistive technologies).
  • Ability to rapidly diagnose and resolve front-end code issues.
  • Self-starter with strong self-management skills.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Team player who loves to collaborate.

Nice to have Technical knowledge and professional experience:

  • Familiarity in PHP-based open source CMS platforms (Drupal, Wordpress) and an understanding of their integration with common nonprofit and e-commerce web technologies, such as: Salesforce, Blackbaud, Luminate, Tessitura/TNEW, EveryAction, ActionKit, third-party web marketing tools, social media platforms, etc.
  • Experience with modern javascript frameworks such as Vue, React, or Angular.
  • An inspired passion for, and understanding of, new and emerging tools, technology, and practices on the web.
  • An understanding of user experience best practices.
  • A strong grasp of web design: typography, color theory, grid systems and layout, etc.
